COMMON QUESTIONS
Common cold questions answered
Should I go to urgent care for a cold in Novi, MI?
If your cold symptoms are severe, not improving after 7 to 10 days, or you are developing ear pain, facial pressure, a high fever, or difficulty breathing β yes, come in. PrimeCare Urgent Care is at 39555 W. Ten Mile Road, Suite 301, Novi, open 7 days a week with no appointment needed. Call (248) 426-9680.
What is the difference between a cold and the flu?
The flu typically comes on more suddenly and causes more severe symptoms β higher fever, significant body aches, chills, and fatigue. A cold generally develops gradually with milder symptoms focused on the nose and throat. A rapid flu test can confirm the diagnosis in minutes at our office.
Do I need antibiotics for a cold?
No. The common cold is caused by a virus and antibiotics do not treat viral infections. Antibiotics are only appropriate if a secondary bacterial infection β like a sinus infection or ear infection β develops.
How long does a cold last?
Most colds resolve within 7 to 10 days. A cough may linger for up to 3 weeks. If symptoms are worsening after day 3 to 5 or not resolving by day 10, it may indicate a bacterial secondary infection and warrants evaluation.
