WHAT IS BRONCHIOLITIS?

A viral lower respiratory infection โ€” most common in infants

Bronchiolitis is an acute viral infection of the lower respiratory tract most often caused by RSV. It primarily affects infants and young children. Most cases resolve without significant intervention, but some can be severe and require hospitalization. Our providers evaluate severity and oxygen levels and refer to the hospital when necessary.

What causes bronchiolitis?

Bronchiolitis is most often caused by RSV (Respiratory Syncytial Virus). It is most common in infants under 12 months and peaks in fall and winter. Other viruses including rhinovirus and influenza can also cause bronchiolitis.

How is bronchiolitis treated?

Most mild cases are managed supportively โ€” keeping the child hydrated, using saline nasal drops, and suctioning mucus. Antibiotics do not treat bronchiolitis since it is viral. Severe cases may require hospitalization with oxygen therapy or IV fluids.

When should I take my child to the ER for bronchiolitis?

Go to the ER or call 911 immediately if your child has blue or gray lips or fingernails, severe difficulty breathing, significant retractions, is not eating or drinking, or is unusually lethargic or unresponsive.
