A fever is defined as an increase in body temperature greater than or equal to 100.4 degrees. Fever occurs when the area of the brain called the hypothalamus shifts your normal body temperature upward. There are many causes of fever, which can include a virus, bacterial infection, inflammatory conditions, heat exhaustion, and some medications or immunizations. While fevers often go away on their own in adults within a few days, over-the-counter medications may be able to lower the fever to make you feel more comfortable in the meantime.
